Blah, It’s hot, humid, and it is summer! How are parents suppose to convince their kids to open a book and read instead of swimming and playing outside?
Well, I honestly I don’t know! I know that when I was a kid I loved to read! The bigger and longer the book the better but that is not the case for most kids I know these days!
I was lucky to have a mom who worked in a library. Each summer the library would have a summer reading program where when you read a certain number of books you would earn a prize. I loved it! I know many libraries still have programs like that so definitely check you local library for a program like that!
24/7 Moms has a list of 11 free Summer Reading Programs for kids you can check out!
Do you have any advice to get you kids excited about reading during the summer? Enter the contest below for a free VTECH V.Reader and game and give me your tips!

we give them points for finishing a book and then can redeem points for special rewards.
We motivate the kids to read by letting *them* choose what to read….picking books out at the store or the library. I don’t care what they read (as long as it is appropriate of course!) as long as they read 🙂

I try to let my daughter find books about things she likes. Right now she loves Corduroy and Pinkaliscious!

The summer reading programs at the library is a good way to enourage a child to read.
Quiz and reward:- We have Quiz night, where we read books to our son and ask him questions and reward him for the answers he give(we give him dollars which can only be spent for buying new books for donation).
Getting into the characters of the story:- We usually plan this for weekends. I help my son to make colorful hats for all of us and we all pick a character of the story and read our lines(enact). Give award(made of paper)to our son for encouraging and showing him that he is doing great.
Counting while reading:- Every night before bedtime we read books. We always count pages while reading books. Kids get excited to do this because they like showing off to everyone the number of pages they read.
Reading time with friends and cousins:-
Here, we invite our son’s friends and cousins of his age for reading time. Everybody gets a chance to read their favorite book and at the end we give all of them an ice cream treat. Kids really enjoy this.

We make reading into a adventure. so if we are reading a book about volcanoes,we might make a one and watch it explode. My daughter might want to read a book about faires, so we plant a flower that she thinks they may like. I also always let them pick their own books so that I know that they will want to read it.

I tell my kids about books I liked as a child and then they want to read them too.
I buy books for my daughter that hold her interest and let her read them at night before bed.

Family reading nights allow our children of different ages to be the leader of one night and nominate a book (or chapter for the oldre kids) to read. We also take trips to our library every week to pick up new titles and keep the kids excited.

We motivate them by having lots of different types of books and we try to get books that have their favorite characters or animals.
My toddler loves listening to stories on cd while following along in the real book. He thinks he is actually “reading.”
I have “reading parties” with my five-year-old daughter. We get lots of fun snacks together and pick out a bunch of books and just eat, laugh, and have fun while we read.
The Summer Reading program at our library and grocery store helps motivate our son to read.
I subscribe to your emails.
We choose books about the characters of my son’s favorite shows or about his interests, ie. trains, trucks, construction equipment, etc.
Bring the books to life- if your kid likes Tonka and construction books or books about diggers, etc, read the books, bring them on a ‘field trip’ and go see some in action. Does your kid like Pinkalicious? Make pink cupcakes, and then make a bunch of green foods.
Cut silly pictures from a magazine and make up little stories about the pictures- make your OWN book.
Use family photos and write a story – ham it up!!
Have books available everywhere, and magazines, cookbooks- use what your child loves to encourage them to want to read written words- in a book, on a poster, online, in a magazine, in a newspaper- reading is reading!

I would take my daughter to the library once a week to get books.
we go to the library every week and take turns reading
my step son is an avid reader and my three year old loves books so, it’s kinda hard to go by them. One thing I’ve tried to clue him in on is the Summer reading programs through the local libraries and Barnes and Noble. They give prizes that are also great motivators

You can enroll them at your local library in their summer reading program where the kids earn prizes for reading, this will encourage them to continue rading during the summer.
we do a daily read. we head to the library once a week and the kiddos get to pick out a book they want-nad it cannot be all pictures-and then mom gets to pick out one to read. kiddos get quiet time after breakfast where they have to read for 30 min. and then after dinner we do baths and quiet time-coloring etc. i put the kiddos away in their beds and sit in between their beds and read a chapter each night.
my little one could really learn with some help!

We take turns choosing books. This gets son to look at books that I know are great but he wouldn’t normally read.
Picking up new books at the library always starts a reading frenzy. We actually read two books a night so it is nice to read something that I could recite without the book.

My idea would be the summer reading program at the library, but you already mentioned it. My daughters love it. Another incentive…our local bank offers $10 deposited in a child’s account when they read 10 books. Check local banks to see if they offer the same near you. Thanks!

We make it exciting! Every time my 3 year old and 1 year old get a book to read we make a big deal about it! If we see them “reading” we will clap, cheer, and high five them. They love books so this is quite often!

I think the most important thing is to make reading an enjoyable activity. Let them get books that interest them, whether it’s about snakes or basketball or Hannah Montana. Once they realize how fun it is, they’ll move on to bigger and better books! Thanks so much for the chance to win this!!
I’m also a Google Friend Connect follower, Thanks again!
I take them to the library and let them pick out their own books. They are always anxious to get home and start reading.
I take the kids to the library with me and we have theme weeks. One week it might be Firetrucks the next week Bears and all the books they pick have to have the theme in them.

My daughter knows if we are in a store if she says mom can we buy this toy the answer 9 times out of 10 will be no. She also knows if we are in a bookstore if she says mom can I have this book 10 out of 10 times the answer is yes. She hates to go clothes shopping so I often say we will stop at the bookstore and then she is all smiles. I really dont have to get her excited to read but we also do our own incentive program here where she gets 10 cents for every page she reads. She has a nice little savings saved up 🙂

My tip is to read with your child and to take turns reading pages aloud.
I love to lead by example by having the kids see that I enjoy reading and then ask them to follow along with you
I keep a variety of books available for my kids. I have magazines for my oldest, he likes to read the Nikelodeon magazines, where my daughter will read any book about animals or princesses. My youngest is the easiest and will read most anything…or at least look at the pictures…he just turned 4 and decided he now wants to learn to read. 🙂
Our library has a summer reading program. For every 5 books you read, you get one ticket to win prizes. Then once a week they have an hour program, with things like music, magic, animals, etc…I make all of my kids sign up for this. It’s free too.
I follow you on GFC. (I’m Pitaharmon).
My son loves summer reading programs at the library – also I let him pick his own books at the library, so he’s eager for us to read them to find out what will happen in the story.
I encourage my kids to read by provding a large selection of books that they can get to without assistance. Whenever they want to read they just grab one from the stack in my room. I also have lots of books based on shows they love, like Dr. Seuss, Toy Story etc.

We read together fun, silly books like Stand Back Said the Elephant, I’m Going to Sneeze.
Getting the books about their favorite movies is a great way to get them to read.
I get them their favorite books like Dr. Seuss.
We visit the library at least twice a week and discuss what we are reading with each other.
Showing them my love for reading & keeping a steady stream of new reading material in the house is a must!

The line of Junie B. Jones books is so entertaining that my 7 year old loves to read the books. So, my tip is to find books that have great story lines for children.
I let them pick out the books, attend reading circle at the library, they enjoy, I have one that loves to read comic books. Any thing to get them to read

Honestly, my son loves books and loves to shop for them…sooooooo we cleaned out all of his old “babyish” books took them to a FABULOUS used book store in our area, got $$$ in credit and I let him pick his choices…he likes all sorts of books and even picked a grown up one…. It’s like I told my husband (he discovered the joys after 40) “When you find what you like…you’ll read…and you’ll love it….
I posted on FB wall of V=Tech and “like” them too!

When it’s raining we have book-fests under blanket tents.
My daughter is only 4 and she loves to read books. I will let her read to me and use her imagination. Have her tell me what she thinks the story is about by looking at the pictures. It peaks her interest in reading more by using her imagination. Plus the fun of being the one reading and not being read to!

Since the kids are just getting introduced to reading, I try to find something that’s fun, interactive and interesting enough to hold their attention longer than I can hold my breath! 🙂

We have a box, stack, or shelf of books in almost every room in the house which in itself encourages reading because it’s there. I also let my kids choose what they want to read as well as offering suggestions. We read togethere as a family often and incorporate books that go along with our summer activities either fiction or nonfiction.

One way I help motivate my kids to read is we take a walk to the library or to the bookstore, each is an easy 10 minute walk from our home! The kids love to take walks and once there I let them choose whatever books the want. Fun! They love to read the books they’ve chosen for themselves! My daughter is not reading yet but loves to have them read to her!;)

My 5 year old son loves Science and learning facts about things – so I get him books with facts for us to read together – we usually read one story book or a chapter of a chapter book and a section of the fact/science book each night before bed. He’s always excited to learn more!
Book time is mom time – my boys can’t resist. We curl up in my bed (sometimes dad joins too) and spend time reading whatever books the boys pick out.
My 5 year old is very into funny books (one of our favorites is “Don’t Be Silly Mrs. Millie) right now. When we’re at the library we try to pick books that look like they will be funny – then it is very fun each night at story time to see if we were right (sometimes they are hilarious, other times not so much).
