It’s Summer – What Kid Wants to Read… How Do We Motivate Them?

bookwormdock

Blah, It’s hot, humid, and it is summer! How are parents suppose to convince their kids to open a book and read instead of swimming and playing outside?

Well, I honestly I don’t know! I know that when I was a kid I loved to read! The bigger and longer the book the better but that is not the case for most kids I know these days!

I was lucky to have a mom who worked in a library. Each summer the library would have  a summer reading program where when you read a certain number of books you would earn a prize. I loved it! I know many libraries still have programs like that so definitely check you local library for a program like that!

24/7 Moms has a list of 11 free Summer Reading Programs for kids you can check out!

Do you have any advice to get you kids excited about reading during the summer? Enter the contest below for a free VTECH V.Reader and game and give me your tips!

On to the Giveaway:

We motivate the kids to read by letting *them* choose what to read….picking books out at the store or the library. I don’t care what they read (as long as it is appropriate of course!) as long as they read 🙂

Quiz and reward:- We have Quiz night, where we read books to our son and ask him questions and reward him for the answers he give(we give him dollars which can only be spent for buying new books for donation).

Getting into the characters of the story:- We usually plan this for weekends. I help my son to make colorful hats for all of us and we all pick a character of the story and read our lines(enact). Give award(made of paper)to our son for encouraging and showing him that he is doing great.

Counting while reading:- Every night before bedtime we read books. We always count pages while reading books. Kids get excited to do this because they like showing off to everyone the number of pages they read.

Reading time with friends and cousins:-
Here, we invite our son’s friends and cousins of his age for reading time. Everybody gets a chance to read their favorite book and at the end we give all of them an ice cream treat. Kids really enjoy this.

We make reading into a adventure. so if we are reading a book about volcanoes,we might make a one and watch it explode. My daughter might want to read a book about faires, so we plant a flower that she thinks they may like. I also always let them pick their own books so that I know that they will want to read it.

Bring the books to life- if your kid likes Tonka and construction books or books about diggers, etc, read the books, bring them on a ‘field trip’ and go see some in action. Does your kid like Pinkalicious? Make pink cupcakes, and then make a bunch of green foods.

Cut silly pictures from a magazine and make up little stories about the pictures- make your OWN book.

Use family photos and write a story – ham it up!!

Have books available everywhere, and magazines, cookbooks- use what your child loves to encourage them to want to read written words- in a book, on a poster, online, in a magazine, in a newspaper- reading is reading!

She also knows if we are in a bookstore if she says mom can I have this book 10 out of 10 times the answer is yes. She hates to go clothes shopping so I often say we will stop at the bookstore and then she is all smiles. I really dont have to get her excited to read but we also do our own incentive program here where she gets 10 cents for every page she reads. She has a nice little savings saved up 🙂

We participate in the local library’s summer reading program which gives them points for reading books and they get to pick out prizes and the end of the program. I also think taking regular trips to the library to pick out their own books gets them excited about reading.

Honestly, my son loves books and loves to shop for them…sooooooo we cleaned out all of his old “babyish” books took them to a FABULOUS used book store in our area, got $$$ in credit and I let him pick his choices…he likes all sorts of books and even picked a grown up one…. It’s like I told my husband (he discovered the joys after 40) “When you find what you like…you’ll read…and you’ll love it….

My daughter is only 4 and she loves to read books. I will let her read to me and use her imagination. Have her tell me what she thinks the story is about by looking at the pictures. It peaks her interest in reading more by using her imagination. Plus the fun of being the one reading and not being read to!

We have a box, stack, or shelf of books in almost every room in the house which in itself encourages reading because it’s there. I also let my kids choose what they want to read as well as offering suggestions. We read togethere as a family often and incorporate books that go along with our summer activities either fiction or nonfiction.

One way I help motivate my kids to read is we take a walk to the library or to the bookstore, each is an easy 10 minute walk from our home! The kids love to take walks and once there I let them choose whatever books the want. Fun! They love to read the books they’ve chosen for themselves! My daughter is not reading yet but loves to have them read to her!;)

My 5 year old is very into funny books (one of our favorites is “Don’t Be Silly Mrs. Millie) right now. When we’re at the library we try to pick books that look like they will be funny – then it is very fun each night at story time to see if we were right (sometimes they are hilarious, other times not so much).
