We have been challenged this week. The challenge is to think of creative ways to create, a Family Reading Night – a special family event where everyone in the family will gather to spend some quality time reading, and where young kids can read animated stories with their V.Reader (if you have one and if not you can enter to win one below!)
Here is my idea for my Family Reading Night. I know that one of my son’s favorite times to read is when his Nana set up the tent in her backyard and they get in and read. So I thought we could create a Summer Reading Fort once a week and we could cook up his favorite meal (chili dogs in a bowl) then we could eat up our food in the tent as a family and then read with flashlights. I remember when I was a kid reading by flashlight made it so much more exciting!
What do you think food, a fort, and flashlight reading, do you think that would be a good time?
On to the Giveaway:

I have a V.Reader and a game to go with it to giveaway to one of my lovely readers.

Just this weekend we built a fort and read inside it. My daughter’s only 2.5 and up for reading at any opportunity!

My husband and I make reading fun by taking turns with the character voices. My husband loves to get giggles out of our son by making up funny voices! 🙂
I follow you on Google Reader!
We have alot of books based on movies. Dr. Seuss, Horton Hears a Who, Toy Story, Finding Nemo, etc…we read a book about the movie out loud and then watch the movie the later. My kids LOVE to read and always appreciate the stacks of books I have lying around.

Mandatory Entry: What are your creative ideas to create a Family Reading Night? Do you already have one and if so what do you do to make it fun? If not what fun ideas do you have to create one?
To create one, it’s important to first foster an atmosphere in the home where reading is encouraged, and where the parents read so the kids follow by example. To make it fun, you could choose a book at the library, and maybe make something for dinner that corresponds with the book. Green Eggs and Ham would be a hoot!

Here’s an idea for Family Reading Night….
Instead of each person reading their own book, why not let them read aloud? You could rotate who reads each week (Kid A, mom, Kid B, Dad) The reader gets to choose the book he/she will read from, but it must be appropriate [maybe create a list to choose from] For older kids [and adults] I think that reading aloud, and learning to be comfortable reading aloud, is a great confidence booster. If you have younger kids who can’t actually “read” they can tell the story by explaining what they see in the illustrations. This activity will help to foster their imagination. Also, everyone listening to the same story can also lead to discussions over the story which improves listening and comprehension skills.
I have a huge passion for food and anything to do with food. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve had a great memory for food scenes in books or movies, just because. I love picking a memorable food scene (it doesn’t have to be a book or movie entirely about food, although those are rich resources) and recreating the food from it. If it’s a movie, of course it should have a book tie-in. If it’s a book already, it’s even better. Off the top of my head, there’s Cloudy wih a Chance of Meatballs (book and movie) for young readers, Redwall (lots of feast scenes and vegetarian ideas) for the older kids. The Phantom Tollbooth is an amazing book for kids and adults and there’s a very cute scene where the characters eat their (food-flavored) words, pun very much intended. Ratatouille is a wonderful film for kids and grownups and No Reservations with Catherine Zeta-Jones is a cute, light movie for gourmets and gourmets-in-the-making. It’s a great way to also tie in healthy eating and cooking with kids, and it’s a lot of fun for everyone! Hope this is enough for the contest, although I loved sharing the idea and hope it helps someone even if I don’t win!
The kids *love* when we occasionally get a tent assembled in the LIVING ROOM. The nice thing about this is it is not weather dependent……!
As to the books they read, they engage much more if they are heavily involved in the picking out process of the books. I learned from the librarian at my kids’ school it doesn’t matter WHAT they read (within reason of course) as long as they read. Boys tend to be drawn to books that I may not think to pick up from the shelf. Don’t forget comic books, kids’ magazines and the Sunday comics.
Just Read!

My grandsons and I have a famiy reading night on the weekends. I read them a story and stop right before the ending. They then come up with their own endings to the story. I then read the book ending. The kids love this!
We do and since the kids are all sorts of ages each child has a night where they get to pick the book.

We like to gather all our fun books, and take turns reading them out loud. We also have a night every month when all our friends gather their “old” books and we trade and read together. It’s super fun and introduces new books!
Thanks!
Make it fun by having a theme night using the book you are reading for food ideas and a craft.
We try to tie everything into a theme. If my son is reading his train book, we put him in train p.j.s & I make his food into a big train shape. He gets excited to find all the trains!

My children and I read series books together.
We pack a picnic and spread a quilt in the yard or at the lake and take turns reading . After each person has had a turn we discuss what we have read. Before we begin again.

I borrow books from the library during the week and on friday and saturday sit with our kids and read them with funny faces, voices and actions. Nowadays kids are looking forward to reading with us.
I follow your blog.

We have the kids read to us, then we discuss what they read.
When my grandchildren come to me or vice versa I make it a point to read them a few books or they show me pictures in the books since they can’t read yet.
Every couple of weeks we pick a book and have a theme day around that book. It is so much fun.
Nice prize. I want to win.
The kids go to the local library and pick out their own books to read and we read every evening around the same time.
We like to sit out on the back porch in the big lawn chairs in a circle. Everybody gets to pick out a book and we read it as we watch the sun set. Actually now we like to go out when it’s raining and read because the sun doesn’t go down until after bedtime…LOL
The kids like me to read a book and then they pretend “read” a book to me. (They are only 2 and 1) But it’s still fun!

What about a theme night? Reading a book with an Italian theme, maybe you could make an Italian supper and music? Then the family could read together.
I don’t have one right now but have often enjoyed them. Family reading can be fun for all. For older kids, set aside a night on the weekend where you all take sleeping bags, pillows, blankets…into one room. Everyone puts on pjs, gets comfy, and just spends time reading in their own space. Then, we can talk and laugh over the stories together as we pass around a bowl of popcorn.
Another idea is to get everyone involved in reading one book or, for young kids, several different books with one theme. You set up a treat for when you are done with all the books – ex. watching a movie or going to a place that goes along with your books. Everyone takes turns reading, and we celebrate at the end.
How about doing crossword puzzles together–looking up words and reading their meanings/definitions and related words. It kills a couple of birds with one stone.
this could really help my boy
AFTER A FAMILY DINNER ON WEDNESDAY HAVE EVERYONE GET COMFORTABLE, TURN THE LIGHTS LOW, TURN ON BACKGROUND MUSIC AND READ FOR AT LEAST AN HOUR.
TIME FLIES BY AND BEFORE LONG THE HOUR WILL EXTEND TO TWO HOURS BY REQUEST.
I am going to do what my parent did and we would sit around and each read a part of the book and do voices. I loved that and it made me want to read more
My daughter is just learning to read so I like to read the book to her and then let her act out the story for the family.

read at different places- like in the car, park etc..start different themes.
we go to the library every week and let them pick, then take turns reading from them
creative ways to read- i think for me that depends on the book. my kids are book lovers anyway, but like, when we go on toad hunts in the backyard (which YUCK we do often, but they love it) often times we’ll hang out on a blanket under one of our apple trees and bring a basket of animal books.
my husband is going to take the kids backyard camping this weekend, and he’s going to the library this week to get some books about sleeping outside, camping, etc.
my oldest has a dollhouse bunkbed and they are forever making that into forts, castles, playhouse, etc…since we have the youngest kids in our family we usually have at least 2 books of every genre and we have a reading party up there.
we have special, fun, activity books in the car- lift the flap books, noisy books, etc. my oldest is into chapter books right now and she keeps one in there too. we bring books to the beach and in the tub and on picnics.

Reading is one of the most important things in life, and the most entertaining. I made sure to give my children and grandchildren a love of reading.
I think a fort is a great idea! I think I would make it after dinner with snack foods though… something that wouldn’t make a mess on our books. Popcorn, pretzels, apple slices? Maybe add jammies and a sleeping bag!

I like taking reading books about animals to my kids, so sometimes I get their stuffed animals and we pretend we are at the zoo or we are on a wild safari.
Every night 30 minutes before bed, my daughter and I curl up on the couch and read. Sometimes we choose a book to read out loud and other times, we read silently. It is a peaceful way to end the night!

Every night is a family reading night. Right now hubby is reading Harry Potter to our girls and every night they are ready to go to bed at 7:50 (bedtime at 8) so that they can hear what happens next.
I used to read to my sons when they were young, or take them to the library and read them a book or two.
We do a family reading night. We all just relax together with popcorn and read our favorite books.
macd9900 at gmail dot com
We have our daily ritual of reading before bed. We snuggle up and read together. My 7-year-old is old enough now that he wants to share in the reading responsibility, so we take turns reading a page. With my 3-year-old, he wants to go through the pictures in the book and tell me what they are about.
Sometimes, we make up our own stories or set the book we just read to music and sing it.
Reading has been a great way to get my kids imagination to soar.
We listen to books on cd and follow along with a real copy of the book.
My daugter has been reading Shel Silverstein a lot and enjoying the poems. I thought it would be great to take turns reading and acting out the silly poems. My daughter’s recitation of “I Cannot go to School Today” while wearing her bathrobe was comical and entertaining!

we have a family reading club simalar to what they do at the libary.the kids get small prizes for reading a certain number of books and after the family reads so many we go on a family outing.
Right now I read to my daughter every night before bed (she’s only 2) but when she gets older I plan on doing a reward program with her when she finishes a new book 🙂

We already have a family reading time/night. My kids love books, so getting them to read is no problem. We usually have quite/reading time three times a week. We turn off all distractions and we spend time as a family reading. My daughter is 8 yrs. old and she is just starting to read. She is behind in her reading skills because she has Autism. She loves to be read to though and she will spend hours looking at books.

Have lots of different books to choose from. Maybe read in different, fun places. Also, maybe you could do a craft or cooking project that goes with the book.
We make it more like an acting script. There a reader of the different characters. And we act out the book. Its a blast

my son and I play a game called “YOUR turn!” He reads for a bit and I listen then in the middle of ANYWHERE…he will call! Your turn and I have to take the book. Sometimes we get silly and do that to each other for like every other word…then it’s just silly…but usually the “rule” is one page before you can call………YOUR TURN!

On the family reading night plan all the dinner geared at travel make dinner from whatever region they are supposely traveling to then have books that coincide with the region for a example Mexican,Italy,Russia,or where ever. They will get a lesson in other cultures and fun.
We visit the library at least twice a week to replenish everyone’s book supply and discuss what we are reading at dinner at least once a week.
I don’t do Family Reading night really b/c my kids are 11 and 1, so not a lot of overlap. Might be good to have us all take turns reading to the one year old or something, though! Get my older one involved in that, although she does like to read on her own.
