Help Me Think Of Creative Family Reading Night Ideas & Win a VTech V.Reader – Closed

family reading night

We have been challenged this week. The challenge is to think of creative ways to create, a Family Reading Night – a special family event where everyone in the family will gather to spend some quality time reading, and where young kids can read animated stories with their V.Reader (if you have one and if not you can enter to win one below!)

Here is my idea for my Family Reading Night. I know that one of my son’s favorite times to read is when his Nana set up the tent in her backyard and they get in and read. So I thought we could create a Summer Reading Fort once a week and we could cook up his favorite meal (chili dogs in a bowl) then we could eat up our food in the tent as a family and then read with flashlights. I remember when I was a kid reading by flashlight made it so much more exciting!

What do you think food, a fort, and flashlight reading, do you think that would be a good time?

On to the Giveaway:

vreader

I have a V.Reader and a game to go with it to giveaway to one of my lovely readers.

Mandatory Entry: What are your creative ideas to create a Family Reading Night? Do you already have one and if so what do you do to make it fun? If not what fun ideas do you have to create one?

Just enter your idea to create a Family Reading Night into a comment below by July 16th at 8 PM PST. I will choose the winner by random number generator then. I will email the winner and the winner will have 48 hours to get back to me or I will choose a new winner.

We have alot of books based on movies. Dr. Seuss, Horton Hears a Who, Toy Story, Finding Nemo, etc…we read a book about the movie out loud and then watch the movie the later. My kids LOVE to read and always appreciate the stacks of books I have lying around.

To create one, it’s important to first foster an atmosphere in the home where reading is encouraged, and where the parents read so the kids follow by example. To make it fun, you could choose a book at the library, and maybe make something for dinner that corresponds with the book. Green Eggs and Ham would be a hoot!

Here’s an idea for Family Reading Night….
Instead of each person reading their own book, why not let them read aloud? You could rotate who reads each week (Kid A, mom, Kid B, Dad) The reader gets to choose the book he/she will read from, but it must be appropriate [maybe create a list to choose from] For older kids [and adults] I think that reading aloud, and learning to be comfortable reading aloud, is a great confidence booster. If you have younger kids who can’t actually “read” they can tell the story by explaining what they see in the illustrations. This activity will help to foster their imagination. Also, everyone listening to the same story can also lead to discussions over the story which improves listening and comprehension skills.

I have a huge passion for food and anything to do with food. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve had a great memory for food scenes in books or movies, just because. I love picking a memorable food scene (it doesn’t have to be a book or movie entirely about food, although those are rich resources) and recreating the food from it. If it’s a movie, of course it should have a book tie-in. If it’s a book already, it’s even better. Off the top of my head, there’s Cloudy wih a Chance of Meatballs (book and movie) for young readers, Redwall (lots of feast scenes and vegetarian ideas) for the older kids. The Phantom Tollbooth is an amazing book for kids and adults and there’s a very cute scene where the characters eat their (food-flavored) words, pun very much intended. Ratatouille is a wonderful film for kids and grownups and No Reservations with Catherine Zeta-Jones is a cute, light movie for gourmets and gourmets-in-the-making. It’s a great way to also tie in healthy eating and cooking with kids, and it’s a lot of fun for everyone! Hope this is enough for the contest, although I loved sharing the idea and hope it helps someone even if I don’t win!

The kids *love* when we occasionally get a tent assembled in the LIVING ROOM. The nice thing about this is it is not weather dependent……!
As to the books they read, they engage much more if they are heavily involved in the picking out process of the books. I learned from the librarian at my kids’ school it doesn’t matter WHAT they read (within reason of course) as long as they read. Boys tend to be drawn to books that I may not think to pick up from the shelf. Don’t forget comic books, kids’ magazines and the Sunday comics.

    Just Read!

What about a theme night? Reading a book with an Italian theme, maybe you could make an Italian supper and music? Then the family could read together.

  50. Steph Comp says

    July 13, 2010 at 10:38 AM

I don’t have one right now but have often enjoyed them. Family reading can be fun for all. For older kids, set aside a night on the weekend where you all take sleeping bags, pillows, blankets…into one room. Everyone puts on pjs, gets comfy, and just spends time reading in their own space. Then, we can talk and laugh over the stories together as we pass around a bowl of popcorn.

Another idea is to get everyone involved in reading one book or, for young kids, several different books with one theme. You set up a treat for when you are done with all the books – ex. watching a movie or going to a place that goes along with your books. Everyone takes turns reading, and we celebrate at the end.

creative ways to read- i think for me that depends on the book. my kids are book lovers anyway, but like, when we go on toad hunts in the backyard (which YUCK we do often, but they love it) often times we’ll hang out on a blanket under one of our apple trees and bring a basket of animal books.

my husband is going to take the kids backyard camping this weekend, and he’s going to the library this week to get some books about sleeping outside, camping, etc.

my oldest has a dollhouse bunkbed and they are forever making that into forts, castles, playhouse, etc…since we have the youngest kids in our family we usually have at least 2 books of every genre and we have a reading party up there.

we have special, fun, activity books in the car- lift the flap books, noisy books, etc. my oldest is into chapter books right now and she keeps one in there too. we bring books to the beach and in the tub and on picnics.

We have our daily ritual of reading before bed. We snuggle up and read together. My 7-year-old is old enough now that he wants to share in the reading responsibility, so we take turns reading a page. With my 3-year-old, he wants to go through the pictures in the book and tell me what they are about.

Sometimes, we make up our own stories or set the book we just read to music and sing it.

Reading has been a great way to get my kids imagination to soar.

We already have a family reading time/night. My kids love books, so getting them to read is no problem. We usually have quite/reading time three times a week. We turn off all distractions and we spend time as a family reading. My daughter is 8 yrs. old and she is just starting to read. She is behind in her reading skills because she has Autism. She loves to be read to though and she will spend hours looking at books.

Sometimes we get silly and do that to each other for like every other word…then it’s just silly…but usually the “rule” is one page before you can call………YOUR TURN!
