With the summer approaching it is time to think about ways to keep our energy bills down! Here are my ideas for saving some cold hard cash this summer!
- First off, if you can, compare rates. Call around or do some internet searching and see who offers the cheapest rates in your area. UK readers can try Energy Helpline to compare rates. My US readers, I recommend doing a quick search for your state and “compare energy rates” for a comparison site near you.
- Cool your home at 78 degrees or warmer with the thermostat fan switched to auto. For additional savings, raise your thermostat to 82 degrees or warmer when you’re away. Who needs a cool house if your not in it… Same goes for the heat, set the thermastat to heat at 68 when your not around.
- Reduce your water heater temperature from 140 degrees to 120 degrees, which is the recommended temperature setting according to the U.S. Department of Energy, to save about $7 a month.
- Make sure to clean or replace the A/C filter regularly. This will help your unit run more efficiently and trim cooling costs.
- Just like your lights, turn off your ceiling fan when you leave the room. A fan that runs all the time costs up to $7 a month.
- Use your dishwasher (no hand washing the dishes!) to conserve energy. Even avoid pre-rinsing dishes if possible to save up to $70 a year.
- As far as your washing machine goes: Adjust the water level on your washing machine to match the load size so as not to use more water than needed. Also wash and or rinse in cold water to save more! Also run the washer and dryer late at night, after 7 pm preferably so you are not washing during peak hours which is more expensive.
- Clean the lint filter in your dryer before every load to dry your clothes faster.
Helen over at Random Bits contributed these tips as well
- Close windows and blinds during the day
- Use your grill or crockpot for dinner instead of you oven which will heat up the whole house
- Pick up some CFL light bulbs!
Close blinds and curtains during the day. CFL light bulbs. Take advantage of the grill and your crock pot for dinner.
These are great tips! Unplugging all of your electronics and appliances when your not using them will also save you cash.
