Five Family Road Trip Safety Tips | Family Vacation Guide

If you’re looking for family vacation ideas that won’t break the bank, consider a family road trip. By planning a vacation around destinations within driving distance, you’ll save money on travel expenses and have the chance to visit interesting attractions that are close to home. Because of the extensive driving you’ll need to do on a family road trip, consider these five tips for staying safe on the road.

  1. Reduce distraction: With a car full of people, distractions are something you’ll come up against, especially on longer drives. Whether it’s the kids getting restless in the backseat, or the urge to search for a new radio station, it can be too easy to take your eyes off the road. As much as possible, rely on someone else in the vehicle to manage these distractions so you can focus on driving. Taking your eyes off the road for even a moment can be dangerous.
  2. Have a good co-pilot: Having another adult in the passenger seat won’t just be helpful for managing distractions; you can also make them the designated navigator. During your family road trip, you’ll need someone to read road maps or adjust the GPS device so the car stays on course and you can focus on driving.
  3. Be a defensive driver: Aggressive driving is unsafe, especially with a car full of people. In hectic traffic, don’t assume that vehicles will notice you; drive cautiously, and remember to signal when turning or changing lanes.
  4. Take regular breaks: Stopping to stretch your legs every so often gives your eyes a break, and can prevent the kids from becoming agitated. Driving for too long without resting can strain your eyes and compromise your concentration, especially at night. If you feel yourself becoming drowsy, that means it’s time to stop driving and find a place to sleep for the evening.
  5. Be mindful of bad weather: Depending on when and where you take your family road trip, you could come up against snow, rain, hail or high winds. Take special care when driving through inclement weather, and if driving conditions become unsafe, pull over and wait for the storm to pass.

Are you interested in taking a family road trip, but not sure your vehicle is up to the task? It may be time to shop for a new car. By securing a low interest used auto loan , you can get a newer, safer car at a price that fits your budget. If you’re interested in reducing your vehicle costs, consider your auto refinance  options. Or, request a couple other auto insurance quotes  to determine if you can save even more money a month on your car insurance premium. The money you save every month on your car payment or auto insurance could go toward your next family vacation.
