It seems lately that I do most of my work on-the-go, from my cell phone!! Working on a smaller device is not easy but if I try to pull out a laptop or tablet our children notice and seem to think it’s their time to get online. With my phone I can discreetly work whenever I have a moment to myself! So I’ve decided to look for a new, larger smartphone to kick off the New Year!!
There’s enormous variety in smartphone selection and it can be overwhelming to pick which device you want, a device that’s going to manage a large portion of my life. Here’s my thinking on the options for finding the perfect phone to match my needs:
RETAIL STORES > One surefire method to getting the right smartphone would be to visit a cellphone store and try out the devices for myself. But this will require fitting that visit into my schedule! I’m not currently in a contract with a service provider so deciding which mobile network operator is the most efficient, both quality and cost-wise is the other thing to consider. Some examples of service providers are Verizon, Vodafone, China Mobile, Sprint, and Telefonica, depending on your location. If I commit to a service provider I could visit the store, speak with a representative who can show me the phones that fit my needs and try the phones out for myself. This is a hands-on approach and would be ideal for me to really get a feel for various phones and their ease of use. But when will I find the time to get there??
ONLINE RESEARCH > My main source for choosing a mobile device will be to read reports and articles by those considered foremost experts in the field. Consumer Reports is a great journal (with online material) which provides consolidated reviews on a huge inventory of products including cell phones. As a not-for-profit company with a survey research center and testing laboratory, they aim for objective, true reviews. Techibest.com, a website based in India that offers buyers guides on mobile phones, laptops, and other technology, is also a great resource for educational articles. I will keep you post on the most valuable review sites I find.
FRIENDS & FAMILY > Finally, word-of-mouth is probably the best way to discover what’s working well for others. By asking friends and family on their opinions I’m sure to get the most candid reviews. Like Consumer Reports, acquaintances will probably not have a commercial motive to support one company over another but will have strong opinions on their mobile phone, as it is a device which has become necessary to succeeding in the modern world.
So wish me luck on my journey to explore service providers and options. When I find the new phone I will be sure to post again and hopefully report out that I was able to keep it to a simpler and quicker process.
