Paper Mate recently introduced a new biodegradable line of pens and mechanical pencils and I could not be more excited!  Consider this: nearly 12 million writing instruments are sold in the U.S. each year, the impact on our planet can be considerable. It is nice to know that now parents and student have a inexpensive and easy way to help save the planet!

The biodegradable components of the new Paper Mate Biodegradable products are made from plant-derived sugar, a renewable resource. Once the biodegradable components are disassembled and placed in soil, they naturally decompose in about a year, producing less waste and more compost. The products are also packaged in 100% PVC-free recyclable material.

The Paper Mate Biodegradable pen comes in black, blue, red or purple ink and retails for about $1.70.  The mechanical pencil is available in 0.5mm or 0.7mm lead sizes and retails for about $2.70.

Paper Mate also has a recycled line of writing products.  The Earth Write Recycled Pencil is made from 100 percent recycled cedar wood from the USA. The Write Bros. Recycled Ball Point Pen is made from 80 percent recycled materials and is available in black, blue and red ink. The FlexGrip Ultra Recycled Ball Point Pen is made from 70 percent recycled materials and is available in black, blue, red and purple ink and the DryLine Grip Recycled Correction Film is made from 67 percent recycled materials.

My Two Cents

As a teacher who sees pens and pencils get used up and thrown away on a daily basis, I am so excited to see Paper Mate making an effort to help our planet. I do not like to think about all these writing products ending up in our landfills. These pens and pencils work great. They write just like any pen or pencil and look very stylish. I love the subtle coloring to them. I am excited to share these products with my students this year!
