As both a mother and a teacher, I am always on the look out for new products that will help my sons get a grasp of those basic skills they need to do well in school. I worry constantly that I am not doing enough to prepare them. My son is only four and he has not been in school long but he already knows that mommy is on a mission and the mission is to get him a good education!
One of my most recent finds (at Target of course!) was the new line of Mead Writing Fundamentals. I love, love, love all the products in this line!
The Mead Writing Fundamentals products are designed to guide parents on how best to introduce and facilitate fundamental writing skills for young learners. Divided into four stages based on the developmental level of the child, these tools progressively build upon one another as children master the skills necessary for writing success.
Many parents don’t realize handwriting development begins well before pencil hits paper. Activities that build eye-hand coordination, introduce pre-writing shapes and focus on multi-sensory skills lay the foundation for successful handwriting. Fittingly, that’s how this progressive line is structured.
Developed in conjunction with a pediatric occupational therapist who specializes in handwriting, the Mead Writing Fundamentals line is divided into four stages based on age and developmental skills. It begins with cutting activities, dot-to-dot projects and coloring exercises that begin eye-hand coordination and fine motor skills. Subsequent products/stages then focus on formal handwriting instruction, including letter formation through tracing and writing practice on paper with raised lines.
There are 11 total products available in the Writing Fundamentals line. These products are designed for certain skill levels and are divided into four stages:
Stage 1 – Fine Motor Development
Stage 2 – Letter Formation
Stage 3 – Primary Writing
Stage 4 – Transitional
So there really is everything for all ages and stages!
My Two Cents:

As I said above, I love these products. My son is a bit resistant to writing and he has actually enjoyed using the Dry Erase Activity Board. I find it encouraging to see him working in his Stage 1 books. This entire line appears to be very well planned and thought out. I am very pleased and impressed Mead.
