Beefaroni (my 3 yr old) started his first day of preschool today. I have a bit of (ok a lot of…) the mommy blues to see my first baby growing up. He has been going to school since he was quite a little guy but someone always had to stay with him while he was there (usually his Nana since I teach full time) but today he actually went all by himself. Beefaroni could not have been more excited or more proud of himself but let me tell you – mom and Nana were beside themselves!

After I put my other little guy ( now lovingly called Monkey) down for his nap this afternoon and sat down to eat a quick lunch. I turned on the TV and there was one of Beefaroni’s favorite shows: Sid the Science Kid. I almost lost it. That’s when I decided I would put up a giveaway to see if that made me feel any better. I always feel better after I give stuff away.

So I have a set of three DVDs to give to one lucky reader. The set includes the first 2 “Sid the Science Kid” DVDs, titled “Change Happens” and “The Bug Club.” As well as the brand new DVD “Dive Olly Dive”. All which were released on August 4th.

I wanted to give these away because my son loves Sid the Science Kid and this show has really helped prepare him for his first day at preschool. The premise of the show centers around Sid, a very inquisitive 4 year old, who enjoys asking and tackling questions about basic scientific principles and why things work the way they do. He tries to answer questions and solve problems with the help of his classmates (Gabriella, Gerald, and May), Teacher Suzie, and his family.

I love that each episode appears to be based on national science learning standards, cognitive learning theory, and on the preschool science curriculum. Each week’s episodes are built around a single scientific theme or concept. The show is very structured and routine with many scheduled elements so that my son knows what to expect. Sid has helped my son to learn the schedule behind going to school every day and to get used to the idea of being dropped off at school and picked up later in the day because he sees Sid get dropped off by his mom in the morning and picked up by his grandma in the afternoon. With out going on forever I simply just want to say that I think you should check this show out if you have little ones in your house especially ones that are getting ready for preschool.

Another show I was recently introduced to is Dive Olly Dive. This  show airs on the Sprout network and I realize now that I had not heard of it before because we do not receive this channel in our area but lucky enough the show just came out on DVD for the first time today! Dive Olly Dive is a show about two young submarines in training named Olly and Beth. The show teaches kids fascinating facts about ocean life and some important life lessons, too. My son loves this show. After watching it once he was in the bath tub singing the theme song at the top of his lungs. Since my husband is a surfer I love that this show teaches my son about the ocean and how to enjoy and respect all that resides in it.

Both these shows: Sid the Science Kid and Dive Olly Dive are both educational and entertaining. Although I believe exercise and playing outdoors is always the best option I know it is not always the option that is available at the time so if you are looking for a good show to turn on I recommend both of these.

Both Sid the Science Kid (The Bug Club and Change Happens) and Dive Olly Dive (Ship Shape Sub) can be bought on DVD starting today – August 4th so look for them near you!
